There are many types of decking, but the most common is wood. The decking is the foundation on which your roof is attached, and if not taken care of can lead to costly repairs. There are several tell-tale signs of damaged decking; these are some of the things to be on the lookout for.

Spots On Your Ceiling:

If you notice spots on your ceiling after a heavy rain, this can mean that the decking of your property has been compromised and that water is leaking through to the interior.

Peeling Paint:

Moisture can cause the paint on your walls to peel. This is caused by excessive moisture and is usually a sign that water is leaking into your property. If your paint is peeling you should have a professional inspect your property to make sure your decking isn't compromised and there aren't leaks in your ceiling.

Full On Leaks:

You may discover water leaking directly into your property through the ceiling. It goes without saying—this is not good. Holes in your decking will allow water to flow directly into your property, and causing substantial damages. Contact a professional immediately if you notice a full on leak.

Where Should I Look For Damages To My Decking?

The best place to start is your attic. Check for dark spots or streaks on the interior of your property as this is caused by water running into your property. This water will lead to mold and mildew, which will slowly destroy the decking. Also check for bowing in the decking, which is a clear signal that moisture from a leak is effecting the structural integrity of your property.
